Stained Glass

The especially commissioned stained glass windows are a significant feature of the Chartered Insurance Institute’s original home at 20 Aldermanbury in the City of London, known as the Insurance Hall.

These mullioned and transomed windows feature traditional heraldic designs and are a major part of the reason why the Insurance Hall has been designated a Grade II listed building.

The windows feature the arms and emblems of 52 insurance companies – plus Lloyd’s of course – all of whom made significant contributions to the construction of the Insurance Hall between 1933 and 1934.

Until the Second World War Blitz, the Insurance Hall was surrounded by other buildings making it difficult to admire the decorative windows, given that these were hidden in an alleyway. The Insurance Hall was the only building in the area to survive the bombing and, when the surrounding area was rebuilt, the original stained glass was left in full view.
